I am not as familiar with this story as some of your previous entries, however, one comment ... how much does Perry's legacy change if the current day practice of umps looking over your glove as you come off the mound, were in place in 1974? Would we even know Gaylord Perry?
I think Gaylord Perry was a heckuva pitcher and would have done fine if he never pitched the spitter. I've seen stuff in which he said he enjoyed the head games he played with batters who didn't know if he was throwing a spitter or not.
