I believe this fact alone, and not so much McEnroe finally besting him at Wimbledon, would be reason enough for him to retire while still very much one of the best players on tour. If not for Connors and McEnroe taking turns defeating him at the Open, I believe Borg goes on to win his 15th major which would've put him over Emerson's record at the time, for Grand Slams.
