NEXT ON THE TEE
The Sports Time Traveler tells stories from his book "Great Golf Tournaments" on the golf podcast "Next on the Tee"
This week I was on the golf podcast , “Next On The Tee” with Chris Mascaro.
Chris has some very high profile guests including an annual appearance with Gary Player.
It was a sensational interview in which I told many stories from my new book, “Great Golf Tournaments.”
You can listen to my part of the show starting at the 38:50 mark on the podcast.
The first story I talk about is Jack Nicklaus’s 32 shots from tee to green in the opening round of the 1975 Masters. I also discuss with host Chris Mascaro how this statistic, “shots from tee to green,” could enhance the viewing experience of core and casual fans.
In addition I tell the following stories:
Joe Louis making the cut in the 1952 Tucson Open (the only top athlete from another sport ever to make the cut in a PGA TOUR event).
Sam Snead with the low score on the entire PGA TOUR over a 2 week period in 1974 when he was 61 years old.
The only time the Big 3 (Player, Palmer and Nicklaus) played in the final group, all together, in a big tournament in their prime.
Chi Chi Rodriguez’s duel down the stretch with “The King,” Arnold Palmer, at the 1964 Western Open.
Johnny Miller’s “59” as mistakenly reported by the New York Times in 1974 and my efforts in 2024 to get it corrected.
I’d love to hear your feedback.
