Dave Wottle battled Steve Prefontaine in the "Mile of the Century" 50 years ago yesterday at Hayward Field

EUGENE, OR - June 21, 1973

I’m back here in 1973 where last night at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon there was track race was billed as the “Mile of the Century.”

It was not oversold.

The race featured 800 meter gold medalist from the 1972 Olympics Dave Wottle vs. the hero of Oregon, 5000 meter runner Steve Prefontaine.
